Lake Matheson is world famous for its beautiful mirror reflections of Mt. Cook/Aorangi, Mt. Tasman and the Southern Alps, and a “must do” experience on the West Coast.
The streams that feed the lake are stained a dark colour by leaching organic matter from the forest floor of the ancient rainforests that surround the lake. These darker waters are what create the stunning reflections.
The Lake Matheson track leads around the lake, through a range of rainforest and wetland ecosystems, with excellent views of the mountains from several lookout points.
Lake Matheson is just a few minutes drive from Fox Glacier Holiday Park.
